Background
I chose the Audelia Road Branch Library of the Dallas Public Library system. Although this is obviously not a STEM library, it is a mixed use library with a portion of the library devoted to STEM materials. I chose this library because it is my neighborhood library and missed going to it during the year it was closed for renovation and now enjoy it immensely in its new and improved state.
The Audelia Road Branch Library is located in the Lake Highlands subdivision of Dallas in the northeast corner of Dallas. It was built in 1971 and underwent a major renovation which required closure for approximately one year in 2004. The renovation transformed the library from a somewhat tired-looking, dark building to a bright user-centered facility. The renovation to a user-centered facility was accomplished in a number of ways including changes to the physical structure, addition of computers, color printers and wireless access, as well as the addition of programs and training for library users.
The renovation cost approximately $3,000,000 and given the improvement in the library, as described in the next blog, that seems like a huge bargain.
